What an IQ of 130 means
An IQ of 130 means the score is two standard deviations above a mean of 100. On a normal curve with a standard deviation of 15, that is about the 97.7th percentile, near the top 2.3 percent of the curve’s area. Many gifted programs quote 130. The quote is their rule. The percentile is the curve. Neither one is a diagnosis, and neither one is something this website can award.
The arithmetic behind 130
Thirty points above 100, divided by 15, is a z-score of 2. The area of a standard normal curve at or below z = 2 is about 0.977, which this site rounds to the 97.7th percentile. The remaining area is about 2.3 percent. People often say “the top 2 percent.” That phrase is a rounding of this same curve, not a separate study. The score chart shows 125 at the 95.2nd percentile and 120 at the 90.9th, so you can see how fast the tail thins.
This site’s very-superior band starts at 130 and runs upward. Superior is 120 to 129. A score of 129 and a score of 130 are one point apart and in different bands. If a handbook says “130,” 129 does not satisfy the written rule, whatever the band names suggest. Measurement error on a real test is the examiner’s topic. This site does not publish a standard error.
Why 130 shows up in program rules
A cutoff is a policy sentence: which test, which composite, which edition, how recent, and who may give it. Some policies say Full Scale IQ. Some allow the General Ability Index when working memory or processing speed pulled the full-scale number down. Some want more than one score, or a portfolio, or a different percentile. The existence of a famous number does not mean your district uses it. Ask for the handbook.
The gifted-testing note on this site is about that choice between GAI and FSIQ. It does not qualify a student. WISC-V scores for parents walks the report a parent actually holds, including the twice-exceptional case where one high composite hides a split. Bring the printed scores. Do not bring a browser estimate.
130 can still be a bad summary
Two standard deviations above the mean on a full-scale composite can coexist with a much lower index. A child can look “130” in a meeting and still struggle to hold steps or finish timed work. That is not a paradox. It is what an average does. What a GAI vs FSIQ gap means describes the size of a split. How to read a cognitive profile is the adult version of the same caution.
Do not coach items the week of an evaluation to push a 126 to a 130. Practice can change a score and can spoil the sitting the program asked for. Do not average two testings, and do not average an online estimate with a clinic score, to cross a line. The line is the program’s. The protocol is the examiner’s.
The nine-task test on this site prints numbers on a conventional mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 so the parts of one sitting can be compared. That conversion is not a census norm, not age-normed, and not a diagnosis. A qualified examiner and the publisher’s manual are what a school, a clinic, a job, or a visa can use.
A 130 on this site is not that 130
If the free IQ test prints 130, the overall estimate for that sitting landed two standard deviations above the mean of our conversion. The tasks are not a WISC or a WAIS. They are not age-normed. Submitting the page as an official score would be a false record. Use it as a personal estimate and a profile name, or do not use it.
The profile name is free with the number. The written reading — domains, tasks, GAI, CPI, and what the pattern means — is the one-time sheet. Neither piece is a gifted designation. If you already have official scores near a cutoff, the GAI calculator only subtracts the two composites you type. It will not round you over a line.
Common questions
What percentile is an IQ of 130?
About the 97.7th percentile on a normal curve with mean 100 and SD 15. About 2.3 percent of the curve’s area sits above it.
Does 130 mean gifted?
Only if a specific program says so, on a test that program accepts. The number alone is a place on a scale.
Will a school accept 130 from this website?
No. The estimate is not a Wechsler and is not for placement.
