GAI on the WAIS-IV
GAI WAIS-IV scores come from Verbal Comprehension and Perceptual Reasoning — six subtests, no working memory, no processing speed. The idea is stable on WISC-V and WAIS-5. The named tasks are not. If you are holding an adult report, start with the WAIS-IV list, then check whether the protocol is actually a later edition.

Pick the battery on the cover of the report. The panel shows which tasks sit in the General Ability Index and which stay out. This is a lookup, not a re-score. It does not replace the conversion tables in the technical manual.

What GAI includes on the WAIS-IV
The WAIS-IV is the 2008 adult Wechsler, ages 16 to 90. It has four primary indexes: Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed. Full Scale IQ averages all four. GAI on the WAIS-IV keeps only the first pair.
That pair is the published answer to a common clinical problem. When Digit Span, Arithmetic, Symbol Search, or Coding sit far from the reasoning tasks, Full Scale IQ is a muddy summary. GAI was added so a clinician could still estimate general ability without those four subtests pulling the number around (Saklofske and colleagues described the same motive on the WISC-IV in 2005; the WAIS-IV carried the composite forward).
GAI is not a second, truer IQ. It is the reasoning-only summary. On the WAIS-IV that means VCI + PRI. People search “GAI WAIS-IV” when they have those two composites on a first page and want to know which tasks actually went into the higher or lower one.

Official GAI on the WAIS-IV is a conversion from six scaled scores, not a homemade average of index numbers. The six tasks are:
- Similarities, Vocabulary, and Information — the core Verbal Comprehension trio.
- Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, and Visual Puzzles — the core Perceptual Reasoning trio.
Left out of GAI, and still inside Full Scale IQ, are Digit Span, Arithmetic, Symbol Search, and Coding. Supplemental tasks such as Comprehension, Figure Weights, Picture Completion, Letter–Number Sequencing, and Cancellation are not in the usual GAI WAIS-IV sum either. Figure Weights exists on the WAIS-IV as a PRI supplement. It is not the adult GAI task people remember from the WISC-V.

| WAIS-5 | FSIQ without the WMI and PSI subtests — confirm the named list on the protocol | Working memory and processing speed; Visual Puzzles if it is also out of FSIQ |
How to read a GAI–FSIQ gap on the WAIS-IV
Because GAI and Full Scale IQ share six of ten core subtests, they are not independent measurements. A small split can already be statistically detectable. On the WAIS-IV, the revised Table C.2 critical values are often about three to four points at the conventional p < .05 line, depending on age. That is why a 5-point GAI > FSIQ split is worth naming and still not a hidden genius score.
Clinicians then ask how rare the gap is — the base rate — not only whether it clears a critical value. About ten points is commonly treated as worth discussing. “Unusual” is often a base rate under 10%, and that threshold moves with ability level. This site does not reprint Pearson’s tables. If you already have both official numbers, paste them in the GAI vs IQ calculator. GAI against efficiency: GAI vs CPI calculator. Five or four official indexes: Wechsler index calculator. For what the split means in words, see GAI vs FSIQ.
Why Visual Puzzles is in WAIS-IV GAI but not WISC-V GAI
On the WAIS-IV, Perceptual Reasoning is still one index. Visual Puzzles is a core PRI task, so it enters GAI. The WISC-V split that index into Visual Spatial and Fluid Reasoning. Visual Puzzles went with VSI. GAI on the WISC-V kept Block Design for space and Matrix Reasoning plus Figure Weights for fluid reasoning. Visual Puzzles dropped out of the ancillary composite.
That is the whole dispute in one line: “Is Visual Puzzles in GAI?” depends on the edition, not on a folk rule about puzzles. The WAIS-IV answer is yes. The WISC-V answer is no.
GAI on the WISC-V
The WISC-V (2014) is the school-age battery most people mean when they say GAI today: verbal, spatial, and fluid reasoning, without memory or speed. The five GAI subtests are Similarities, Vocabulary, Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, and Figure Weights. Full Scale IQ on that edition is a seven-subtest composite. Visual Puzzles is a primary Visual Spatial task and still sits outside both FSIQ and GAI.
If a parent is holding a WISC-V printout and an older sibling’s WAIS-IV printout, the two GAI figures are not interchangeable. One includes Figure Weights and excludes Visual Puzzles. The other does the opposite and also includes Information.
GAI on the WAIS-5
The WAIS-5 (2024) uses the five primary indexes the WISC-V already taught people: VCI, VSI, FRI, WMI, and PSI. GAI remains an ancillary composite that drops working memory and processing speed. Official GAI is still a conversion from named subtests, not a mean of three index scores.
Visual Puzzles does not enter the usual WAIS-5 Full Scale, so it does not enter GAI either. Confirm the exact list on the protocol you have. We do not reprint the WAIS-5 conversion table. If VCI, VSI, FRI, WMI, and PSI are already printed, paste them in the Wechsler index calculator. Our online analog averages the three reasoning domains so a gap is readable when no Wechsler is on hand. That analog is not a WAIS-5 score.
A childhood GAI is not the same formula as an adult GAI
A WISC-V GAI and a GAI WAIS-IV score can both be standard scores with a mean of 100. They still do not measure an identical bundle of tasks. Subtracting them as if they were two sittings of one exam treats the label as the construct. The label stayed. The recipe changed: Information in or out, Figure Weights in or out, Visual Puzzles in or out, four indexes versus five.
When someone retested from child to adult, read each report’s GAI against its own Full Scale IQ. Then, if you need a story across time, talk about the domains that actually overlap — verbal knowledge, matrix-style reasoning, block construction — not about a three-point movement in a composite that swapped ingredients.
Common questions about GAI on the WAIS-IV
Which subtests make GAI on the WAIS-IV?
GAI on the WAIS-IV uses Similarities, Vocabulary, Information, Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, and Visual Puzzles. That is the Verbal Comprehension Index plus the Perceptual Reasoning Index. Working memory and processing speed stay out.
Is a GAI WAIS-IV score the same as Full Scale IQ?
No. Full Scale IQ on the WAIS-IV also includes Digit Span, Arithmetic, Symbol Search, and Coding. GAI drops those four. The two numbers share six subtests, so they move together, but they are not the same composite.
Can I compare a WISC-V GAI with a GAI WAIS-IV score?
Not by subtracting them. WISC-V GAI uses Figure Weights and leaves Visual Puzzles out. WAIS-IV GAI does the reverse. Read each edition on its own terms, then look at the gap inside that report.
Does Visual Puzzles count toward GAI on the WAIS-IV?
Yes. On the WAIS-IV, Visual Puzzles is a core Perceptual Reasoning subtest, so it is inside GAI. On the WISC-V it is not. That is the usual source of confusion.
How large does a GAI–FSIQ gap have to be on the WAIS-IV?
On the WAIS-IV, the revised Table C.2 critical values are often only a few points because the composites share subtests. A 5-point split can already be a real difference. Whether it is unusual is a base-rate question. We do not reprint Pearson’s tables.
Does this page re-score a WAIS-IV?
No. It names which subtests sit in GAI on each edition. If you already have official FSIQ and GAI, paste them in the calculator. The nine-task estimate on this site is construct-aligned and is not a Wechsler.
