How to take the GAI IQ test

The GAI IQ test on this site is nine original tasks in the browser. It estimates Full Scale IQ, the General Ability Index, and the gap between them. It is not a WAIS or a WISC. This page is the sitting plan. The test itself stays on its own URL.

Who this GAI IQ test is for

Sit the nine tasks when you do not have a Wechsler report in front of you and you want a personal estimate of the usual IQ number and of GAI. If a psychologist already printed Full Scale IQ and the General Ability Index, do not retake anything here to “check” those scores. Paste them into the GAI vs IQ calculator. The calculator subtracts. It does not rebuild the test.

The estimate is for personal understanding. It cannot be used for school placement, a job, a visa, a disability claim, or a diagnosis. Those decisions need a qualified examiner and the publisher’s norms. If that is the decision in front of you, this sitting will not answer it.

Before you open the first task

You do not need an account. Answers stay in this browser until you clear them. Sign-in is optional and only matters later, if you want a finished sitting attached to an email. A phone works. A larger screen makes the spatial tasks easier to see, but it does not change the scoring rule.

  • Pick a quiet half hour. Each task is a few minutes. You can leave after any task and come back.
  • Do not look up words, patterns, or “the right analogy.” An outside answer makes the estimate describe the search, not you.
  • Do not sit it for someone else, and do not coach a child through the items. The page is an adult self-check, not a supervised Wechsler.
  • If you are exhausted, ill, or rushing, wait. Processing-speed items punish a bad hour, and that will drag the full-scale estimate more than GAI.

There is no countdown on the reasoning tasks. Symbol search does care about pace, because processing speed is the construct. Read each item once, answer, and move. Second-guessing every choice usually adds noise, not points.

What the nine tasks are asking

The battery follows a CHC / WAIS-5 map: verbal knowledge, fluid reasoning, visual processing, working memory, and processing speed. GAI on this estimate is the mean of the first three. Full Scale IQ is the mean of all five. That is why the same sitting can print two different numbers. The method page states the formulas. This page only tells you what you will see.

Nine tasks, five domains. Names only — items stay inside the test.
TaskDomainWhat you do
AnalogiesVerbal (VCI)Complete a same-relation pair
Vocabulary (antonyms)Verbal (VCI)Pick the opposite of a word
Matrix reasoningFluid (FRI)Find the rule in a grid
Figure weightsFluid (FRI)Keep a quantitative rule across shapes
Paper foldingSpatial (VSI)Track a fold and a hole
Visual puzzlesSpatial (VSI)Choose parts that make a target
Computation spanWorking memorySolve, then recall
Visual reversalWorking memoryRepeat a short sequence backwards
Symbol searchProcessing speedScan a row for targets

You can open any task from the list. The sensible order is top to bottom, because the free result needs all nine before both composites are meaningful. A partial sitting is saved in the browser. It is not a score.

How long it takes, and when to stop

Most people finish in about 30 minutes. Some finish faster if the items are easy for them. Some take longer on the spatial and memory tasks. There is no prize for speed except on symbol search, where speed is part of the score. Pausing between tasks is fine. Pausing inside a memory item to write the sequence down is not a fair trial of working memory.

Stop if the page is a curiosity and you have seen enough. Stop if you notice you are choosing the same option without reading. The laboratory marks a sitting as thin when answers are mostly one choice, or when the run is faster than the items can be read. That flag is a check on the session. It is not a clinical validity scale, and it does not diagnose anything.

Resume is per browser, not per person. A private window, a cleared cache, or a different device starts a new sitting. The test page shows which tasks are already done on this device.

What you can read for free

After all nine tasks, three numbers are free: overall IQ (the Full Scale estimate), GAI, and the gap, which is GAI minus that IQ. A positive gap means reasoning sat above the full average, which usually means memory or speed pulled the average down. A negative gap means the opposite. A gap near zero means the two summaries agree.

The five domain scores, the nine task scores, and CPI are laid out on the sample report. Those specimen numbers are invented. Your own detailed sheet is a separate purchase, saved to the checkout email so you can open it again. You do not need that sheet to see the two composites. If you only wanted “what is my GAI versus my IQ,” the free line is the answer this test can give.

Read the size of the gap on what a GAI vs FSIQ gap means, and the bands on what a good GAI score is. Do not treat a single sitting as a rank against the population. The nine tasks use a conventional mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 so the two composites can be compared with each other. They are not census norms.

What to do with the estimate

If the two numbers sit close together, one summary is enough for a personal picture. If GAI is clearly higher, read why GAI is higher than IQ before you decide the full-scale number “isn’t you.” If you later receive an official report, trust that report. Do not average it with this estimate. Different items, different norms, different day.

A retake on this site clears the answers stored in the browser and starts again. Taking it twice in an afternoon mostly measures memory of the items. If you want a cleaner second look, wait, and still treat both runs as estimates.

Common questions

Do I need an account to take the GAI IQ test?

No. The nine tasks run in the browser without sign-in. Answers stay on this device. My page is optional.

How long is the GAI IQ test?

About 30 minutes for all nine tasks. You can stop after any task and resume later in the same browser.

Is the score a WAIS or WISC IQ?

No. Items are original and the conversion is not a census norm. It estimates Full Scale IQ, GAI, and the gap on a 100/15 scale. It is not a Pearson test.

What is free?

All nine tasks, plus Full Scale IQ, GAI, and the gap. The sample shows the layout of the detailed sheet. Your own domain and task scores are the optional detailed report.

Ready when you are

Ready to sit the nine tasks?

About 30 minutes. No account. Full Scale IQ, GAI, and the gap are free.
