Is a GAI IQ test the same as a WAIS?
People search “GAI IQ test” and land on two different things: a published Wechsler composite from a clinic, and a browser estimate that borrows the same idea. This page separates them. It does not re-score a WAIS, and it does not claim the nine tasks are one.
Two products share a name and not a license
On a real WAIS or WISC, the General Ability Index is an ancillary composite the examiner can derive from specified subtests. Full Scale IQ is the standard summary of the core battery. Both numbers come from Pearson items, a standardized administration, and age norms. GAIvsIQ does not sell, host, or rescore that test.
The nine-task GAI IQ test is a different object. The items are original. The domains are mapped to the same broad abilities (verbal knowledge, fluid reasoning, visual processing, working memory, processing speed). The scores are placed on a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 so GAI and the full-scale estimate can be compared with each other. That scale choice is a convention. It is not a norm table from a census sample.
If you already have official GAI and FSIQ, skip the tasks. The calculator only subtracts the two composites you type in.
What the estimate is trying to match
The idea of GAI, not the item bank, is what we follow. Saklofske and colleagues described GAI so clinicians could talk about general ability when working memory or processing speed distort the full-scale average. On the five-index map used here, GAI keeps verbal, fluid, and visuospatial work and drops working memory and processing speed. Full Scale IQ keeps all five. The gap is GAI minus the full-scale number.
Subtest membership still depends on the edition of the real Wechsler. WAIS-IV GAI is not the same list as WISC-V GAI. The WAIS and WISC page names those lists. The browser tasks are analogs (similarities-style analogies, vocabulary-style antonyms, matrices, weights, folding, puzzles, span, reversal, search). An analog is not an alternate form. Practice on these items does not prepare you for a clinical administration, and it should not be used that way.
What does not carry over from a Wechsler
- Age norms. A Wechsler standard score compares you with people your age. This estimate does not.
- Reliability and the standard error. We do not invent a reliability coefficient or an SEM we have not measured. A three-point story is not a confidence interval.
- Base rates. Whether a GAI–FSIQ gap is rare is printed in the technical manual. We do not copy those tables.
- Administration. A clinic controls timing, prompts, discontinue rules, and effort. A browser cannot see whether you looked up a word.
- Diagnosis. Neither ADHD, a learning disability, nor giftedness is a score on this site.
Those limits are also listed on the method page. Read them before you quote a number from the nine tasks in an email to a school. The terms of the site already say the estimate is not valid for school, work, or a visa. This page is the plain-language version of that line.
When an online estimate is still worth sitting
It is useful when you have no report and you want to see whether reasoning and the full average tell the same story. A large positive gap on the estimate is a hint to look at memory and speed, not a finding you can take to a committee. A flat profile is a hint that one number is a fair personal summary. Both hints can be wrong, because the items are short and the norms are not clinical.
It is the wrong tool when a decision-maker asked for a Wechsler, a Stanford–Binet, or any named battery. Send them the examiner’s report. If the report lists GAI and FSIQ and you only need the arithmetic, use the calculator. If the report lists the five indexes and not GAI, the index calculator shows which index peaked and which sat under the full-scale number. Index means are not official GAI.
Do not average an estimate with a clinic score
A WAIS-IV from three years ago and a browser sitting from tonight are not two forms of one exam. Subtracting them produces a number with no manual behind it. The same warning applies inside the Wechsler family: a childhood WISC-V GAI and an adult WAIS GAI do not use the same subtests. Compare overlapping ideas (verbal, spatial, fluid, memory, speed) only with someone who has both protocols.
If the nine-task result surprised you, the next honest step is not a second website. It is either to accept the estimate as a rough personal picture, or to book a qualified assessment if a real decision depends on it. Retaking these nine tasks the same day mostly recalls the items.
How this laboratory phrases the result
We say “estimate” for the nine tasks and “official composite” for numbers you paste from a report. We do not say the higher of GAI and FSIQ is your real IQ. FSIQ is the default summary when the indexes agree. GAI is the better description of reasoning when memory or speed dragged the average down. A gap means one average is a poor description of the profile.
The sample report shows the sheet layout with invented numbers, including a worked gap. Use it to learn the labels before you sit the tasks, not as a score to compare with yours.
Common questions
Is the GAIvsIQ test an official IQ test?
No. It is a nine-task estimate mapped to CHC / WAIS-5 domains. It is not the WAIS, the WISC, or a Pearson product.
Why can the estimate still show GAI and IQ?
Because both are averages on the same 100/15 scale. GAI drops working memory and processing speed. IQ here means the five-domain average. The comparison is internal to the sitting.
Can I use it to prepare for a WAIS?
No. Practice on analog items is not an alternate form, and coaching defeats the point of a standardized test. Do not use this site to rehearse a clinical exam.
I have a report. Should I still take the test?
No. Paste Full Scale IQ and GAI into the calculator. The tasks are for people who do not have those composites.
Where to go next
The GAIvsIQ laboratory keeps one URL for each job. This note does not replace the instrument it points to.
Ready when you are
No official report yet?
Sit nine original tasks. Or, if the report is already on the desk, paste the two composites instead.
