What average IQ means
Average IQ, on the labels this site uses, means a standard score from 90 through 109. The mean of the scale is 100, so the middle of the average band is the mean itself. On a normal curve with a standard deviation of 15, that band holds about half the area. Average is a wide, ordinary result. It is not a failure and not a full description of a person.
The band, not a single point
Ninety is about the 25.2nd percentile. One hundred is the 50th. One hundred and nine is still inside the band; 110 is the first score this site calls high average, near the 74.8th percentile. Subtract the lower percentile from the higher one and the stretch from 90 up to 110 covers about 49.6 percent of the curve. That is the sense in which “most people are average” can be said without a census: it is the area of the shape the scale assumes.
What an IQ of 100 means is only the midpoint. A score of 92 and a score of 108 are both average here, and they are farther apart than 108 and 112, which fall in different bands. Band names are shelves. The points are a line. The score chart is the line.
Why “average” sounds harsher than the math
In ordinary speech, average can mean mediocre. On a cognitive scale it means “near the reference mean.” The reference mean was set to 100 on purpose. Landing there is what the ruler was built to call typical. Low average, on this site, is 80 to 89. High average is 110 to 119. Superior starts at 120. Treating the entire average band as a disappointment compares people to a story, not to the scale.
Average also does not mean “the same as everyone else in the room.” A classroom, a profession, or a group of friends is not a random draw from the curve the test used. A room can sit high or low relative to a national norm and still contain a spread. This page will not invent that spread for any school or job.
An average composite can hide an uneven profile
Full Scale IQ is an average of broad indexes. GAI is an average that leaves out working memory and processing speed. Either one can land between 90 and 109 while a single index does not. Words can be strong and visual puzzles weaker, or reasoning can sit above memory and speed. The overall number then describes the center of a shape, which is exactly when a profile is more informative than the center.
How to read a cognitive profile names the two axes this site uses: verbal versus visual, and reasoning (GAI) versus memory and speed (CPI). The free result of the nine-task test includes a name from those axes so the average is not the only sentence. The name is still a label on an unnormed sitting, not a diagnosis of a learning disability or of giftedness.
The nine-task test on this site prints numbers on a conventional mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 so the parts of one sitting can be compared. That conversion is not a census norm, not age-normed, and not a diagnosis. A qualified examiner and the publisher’s manual are what a school, a clinic, a job, or a visa can use.
What to do with an average estimate
If you wanted to know whether a score was “low,” and the estimate is inside 90 to 109, the descriptive answer on this site is no. If you wanted a school decision, the estimate was the wrong instrument before you saw the number. If you wanted to see whether the average was hiding a split, read the profile name and, if you want the written version, the one-time interpretation.
The free IQ test takes about 30 minutes and does not ask you to sign up. It is a personal estimate. If a WISC or WAIS report is already printed, use that report’s own percentile, and use the GAI calculator only to subtract official composites. Do not let an average online number talk you out of a real evaluation someone qualified recommended, and do not let it talk you into one.
Common questions
What IQ range is average?
On this site’s labels, 90 through 109. The mean is 100. High average starts at 110. Low average is 80 through 89.
Is average IQ exactly 100?
100 is the mean. Average, as a band, is the stretch around that mean, not only the single point.
Are half of all people average?
This site does not have that count. On the normal curve, the area from about the 25th percentile to about the 75th is near half. That is the shape of the scale, not a survey.
